River Rafting
A river trip changes the scale of Grand Canyon completely. Instead of looking down from the rim, you travel through the rock layers, camp on beaches, hike side canyons and watch the canyon walls rise around you. Trips range from one-day western-canyon outings to multi-day expeditions through Grand Canyon National Park.

The August 29 flash flood disrupted Grand Canyon river and inner-canyon operations, and current official information is changing quickly. River parties and upcoming commercial passengers should follow trip-specific direction from their outfitter and current National Park Service river information. Private permit holders should use NPS River Permits guidance. Do not assume a scheduled departure is operating normally—or canceled—without confirming the exact trip.
Commercial trips
Licensed concessioners operate professionally guided trips through Grand Canyon National Park. NPS currently lists commercial trips ranging from about 3 to 18 days, and many popular departures reserve well in advance. During the current post-flood operational uncertainty, contact the operator directly before relying on a scheduled departure.
Private trips
Noncommercial trips are self-guided and require river permits. Full-canyon private trips are generally 12–25 days and are assigned through a weighted lottery. Technical whitewater experience is required within the group. Current river-operation instructions override normal permit itineraries while post-flood operations remain unsettled.
Shorter experiences
Not every river experience requires a full expedition. One-day whitewater, smooth-water floats and short air-and-river combinations use different locations and logistics, so compare the actual experience before booking. Current Grand Canyon National Park river disruptions do not automatically describe every Colorado River product outside the affected corridor.
Motor, oar or paddle?
Motorized rafts cover more river miles per day and can shorten the overall itinerary. Oar-powered trips are slower and quieter, while paddle trips add active participation where offered. Compare trip length, hiking emphasis, craft type and physical demands—not just price.
Camping, heat, sand and side hikes
Multi-day rafting is an expedition rather than a resort experience. Expect beach camping, changing weather, limited privacy, sand, early mornings and active loading or unloading. The payoff is access to parts of Grand Canyon most visitors never experience.

Grand Canyon National Park maintains current commercial concessioner information, private permit requirements, river alerts and lottery resources. Check those sources before committing to dates or support services—especially while post-flood river operations and inner-canyon access information are changing quickly.
Make the River Trip the Anchor
Commercial capacity is limited and private full-canyon trips use a permit system. Treat river travel as the trip anchor, not a last-minute add-on—and treat current operator and NPS operational guidance as controlling over normal itinerary descriptions during the post-flood period.
