Current inner-canyon status — checked September 24, 2026

Major Inner-Canyon Closures Remain in Effect

Current National Park Service information lists Bright Angel Trail open from the South Rim to River Resthouse, Plateau Point Trail open to Plateau Point, South Kaibab Trail open only to Tip-Off, and the Tonto Trail open between Tip-Off and Havasupai Gardens. South Kaibab below Tip-Off, River Trail east of River Resthouse, Black Bridge, Silver Bridge, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the entire North Kaibab Trail remain closed. Water availability can change independently of trail status, so check the official NPS Key Hiking Messages immediately before any below-rim hike.

Check Park-Wide Changes

Use the current trail summary above first for inner-canyon closures. Then open the full conditions page for park-wide closures, facility notices, road status and other operational details that could change today's plan.

Elevation matters

Live Weather

Rim and inner-canyon conditions can differ dramatically. Check the current forecast before hiking, driving or waiting for sunset.

Move efficiently

Parking, Shuttles & Entrance Waits

South Rim parking, shuttle routes and entrance congestion can consume a surprising amount of a short visit. Check the current transportation guide and South Entrance webcam before moving the car or joining the entrance line.

Before choosing an itinerary

Which Part of the Grand Canyon Are You At?

The time-based plans below are built primarily for the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. If you are at the North Rim or Grand Canyon West, use the destination guide for that area instead of trying to follow a South Rim schedule.

Grand Canyon National Park

South Rim

Use the time-left plans below for Mather Point, Grand Canyon Village, Hermit Road, Desert View and other South Rim stops.

Seasonal & remote

North Rim

Services, roads and trail access differ substantially from the South Rim. Check current North Rim status before deciding what is realistic today.

Hualapai-operated destination

Grand Canyon West

Grand Canyon West has its own admission, transportation and activities. Use the West Rim guide for Skywalk, Eagle Point and Guano Point planning.

Choose by the hours you actually have

How Much Time Is Left Today?

At the South Rim, choose the closest time window below. Treat these as planning ranges, not promises: parking, shuttle waits, weather, daylight and closures can shrink the usable part of your visit. If sunset or darkness is approaching, choose the shorter plan.

About 1–2 hours

Stay in One Area

Do not start a scenic drive. Get to the rim and stay compact. Around the Visitor Center, combine Mather Point with a short Rim Trail walk toward Yavapai. In the village, stay with the overlooks and historic district already around you. With this little time, the goal is one good canyon experience, not a shortened version of the half-day itinerary.

About 3–5 hours

Use the Half-Day Plan

Choose one South Rim area or corridor and experience it well. Add a longer rim walk, museum or another nearby viewpoint, but resist crossing the park simply to collect stops.

About 6+ usable hours

Build One Good Day

With most of a day still available, combine the central South Rim with either Hermit Road or Desert View Drive. Choose the corridor that fits current transportation, weather, daylight and the direction you need to travel afterward.

Staying overnight?

Do Not Force Tomorrow Into Today

If you have another full day, use today for a compact rim experience, sunset or whichever corridor is easiest under current conditions. Save the other major corridor, a longer walk, museums or a conservative hike for tomorrow instead of racing between them before dark.

Before changing your plan

Check the Official Park Sources

For safety, closures, roads, trails and facility operations, National Park Service information is the final same-day authority. This site helps you interpret and organize the trip, but official park status should decide whether a route or facility is actually available.
