There is no single Grand Canyon forecast. The South Rim, North Rim, and Colorado River can feel like different seasons on the same day. Compare live conditions at three elevations before you choose a hike, pack the car, or decide how to spend the day.

Phantom Ranch Is a Weather Reference Point

The inner-canyon forecast uses Phantom Ranch elevation for temperature context. After the August 29 flash flood, current NPS pages conflict on access to the Phantom Ranch/North Kaibab corridor and related facilities. Use the weather data here for elevation context, but check the live Key Hiking Messages and current NPS alerts before planning any below-rim route.

Elevation changes everything

Why One Forecast Is Not Enough

Grand Canyon National Park spans thousands of feet of elevation. The National Park Service notes that temperature generally rises about 5.5°F for every 1,000 feet you descend. That is why a comfortable afternoon on the rim can become dangerous heat near the river.

South Rim

Around 7,000 feet, Grand Canyon Village is the forecast that matters most for the park's main visitor area, viewpoints, shuttles, lodging, and South Rim roads.

North Rim

Around 8,000 feet, the North Rim is usually cooler and receives substantially more winter snow. Access and services are also more seasonal.

Inner Canyon

At roughly 2,460 feet, Phantom Ranch represents the much hotter canyon floor. In summer, the temperature difference from the rims can be dramatic.

Weather changes the itinerary

Conditions That Deserve More Than a Forecast

A temperature icon cannot tell you whether a trail is closed, a road is icy, or a thunderstorm has created a flash-flood hazard. Use the forecast to plan the day, then use live park sources to decide whether the plan is still safe and practical.

Summer Heat

The inner canyon can be far hotter than either rim. A mild-looking rim forecast is not a reliable guide to hiking conditions thousands of feet below.

Monsoon Storms

Late-summer thunderstorms can build quickly and bring lightning, intense localized rain, strong winds, and flash flooding. Conditions can differ sharply across short distances.

Winter Snow & Ice

Rim elevations can receive significant snow. Roads and trails may become icy, visibility can fall quickly, and temporary road closures are possible during storms.
