Grand Canyon Current Conditions & Closures
This page combines our current editorial summary with official National Park Service conditions and hiking information. Grand Canyon conditions can change quickly because of storms, flash floods, wildfire, road work, water-system repairs, trail maintenance and seasonal operations. For anything that affects safety or access, the National Park Service should remain your final same-day source.
MAJOR INNER-CANYON CLOSURES REMAIN IN EFFECT
The latest NPS hiking information lists Bright Angel Trail open from the South Rim to the River Resthouse, Plateau Point Trail open to Plateau Point, South Kaibab Trail open only to Tip-Off, and the Tonto Trail open between Tip-Off and Havasupai Gardens. South Kaibab below Tip-Off, River Trail east of River Resthouse, Black Bridge, Silver Bridge, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground and the entire North Kaibab Trail remain closed. Boat Beach is closed to normal visitor use except emergencies and brief scouting of the new rapid formed at Bright Angel Creek. There is no estimated reopening date for these closure areas. Commercial and non-commercial river trips may continue, with hiking exchanges at Pipe Creek Beach. NPS currently lists potable drinking water available in large black tanks adjacent to the restrooms at both Bright Angel Trailhead and South Kaibab Trailhead. Inner-canyon sources including the 1.5-Mile Resthouse, 3-Mile Resthouse and Havasupai Gardens remain off. North Rim potable tap water also remains unavailable. Carry sufficient water and a reliable treatment method, and check the official NPS Key Hiking Messages immediately before every below-rim hike.

Grand Canyon Village Weather
Use the current Grand Canyon Village forecast for rim conditions. Inner-canyon temperatures and weather can differ sharply, so compare the rim forecast with current National Park Service guidance before hiking below the rim.
South Rim Open; Water Recovery Work Continues
The South Rim remains open, but the August 29 flash flood severely damaged inner-canyon infrastructure and the Transcanyon Waterline. In a September 19 update, NPS projected that pumping from the Bright Angel Creek intake to the new treatment plant could begin around November 16, with water distribution to residents beginning by Thanksgiving and concessionaires then starting a phased return of overnight guest services. Those dates are tentative. NPS is also working toward hauling about 200,000 gallons of water per day to stabilize South Rim storage. Stage 4 water restrictions remain in effect, and visitors should arrive prepared with drinking water and continue conserving water. Check current NPS lodging and water notices before relying on an in-park overnight reservation, campground water source or shower facility.
North Rim: Scenic Roads Open, Services Limited
Select North Rim areas are open for the 2026 season, including the scenic roads to Cape Royal and Point Imperial, but potable water is not available on the North Rim. As of September 19, the North Rim gas station has closed for the season; NPS lists fuel at Jacob Lake and the North Rim Country Store. The North Kaibab Trail is closed from the trailhead to Phantom Ranch following the August 29 flood, and several fire-affected rim trails remain closed. Bring enough water, food and fuel for your visit and check the current North Rim status before travel.
Fall Shuttle Service
From September 12 through November 30, the free Village (Blue), Kaibab Rim (Orange) and Hermits Rest (Red) routes are operating on fall schedules, along with the early-morning Hikers’ Express. The Tusayan (Purple) route is closed for the season. Blue runs 7 a.m.–9 p.m.; Orange begins at 6 a.m.; Red begins at 8 a.m.; Orange and Red continue until about one hour after sunset.
Dry Camping & Stage 4 Water Restrictions
Mather Campground and Desert View Campground remain open for dry camping while South Rim water conservation continues. Campground water spigots are off, restroom facilities remain available, and Camper Services is closed. NPS currently lists Stage 4 water restrictions on the South Rim and asks visitors to conserve water and arrive prepared with drinking water. Check the official operations and fire-information pages before an overnight stay.
Roads
Snow, wildfire, construction and accidents can affect park and regional roads. For North Rim road information, NPS provides a roads line at 928-638-7496 in addition to web updates.
Trails & Water
Trail and water status change independently. Current NPS guidance includes major inner-canyon closures, while some South Rim corridor sections remain open. Potable water is available at selected trailheads but remains off at several below-rim locations. Carry sufficient water and check the official hiking messages immediately before any below-rim trip.
Webcams
NPS webcams can give a quick visual check of snow, clouds and visibility at the rim, but they do not replace forecasts or closure notices.
If Your Plan Includes Hiking
Check weather, trail closures, water status and daylight before leaving the rim. A closed water station, flash-flood closure or thunderstorm can turn a routine itinerary into a high-risk situation.
If Your Plan Includes Driving
Check the exact entrance and road corridor, especially in winter or on the North Rim. Large RVs also face restrictions on some North Rim scenic roads.
