Grand Canyon Mule Rides
Mule trips have been part of Grand Canyon tourism for generations. In 2026, current South Rim options include the Canyon Vistas rim ride and a Havasupai Gardens day ride. Phantom Ranch overnight mule rides are currently canceled through February 2027 because of trail conditions. Reservations, rider requirements and current operating status matter.
South Rim
Current 2026 options include the Canyon Vistas rim ride and a Havasupai Gardens day ride. The operator says the Havasupai Gardens ride is available through February 28, 2027. Phantom Ranch overnight mule rides are currently canceled through February 2027 because of trail conditions.
North Rim
No North Rim mule rides are being offered in 2026. The North Rim is operating with reduced services during recovery work, so do not rely on older travel articles that still advertise North Rim rides.
Reservations
NPS says South Rim mule rides may be booked up to 15 months in advance and can fill early. If a ride is a priority, confirm eligibility and availability before building lodging, transportation or other fixed plans around that day.
Expect strict rider restrictions
Current NPS requirements include a minimum age of 9, minimum height of 57 inches, and a fully dressed weight limit below 200 or 225 pounds depending on the trip. Riders must be able to understand instructions in English, and anyone under 18 must ride with a parent or guardian. Confirm the operator's full current requirements before booking.
Comfort matters more than nostalgia
Mule riding can be physically tiring even though you are not hiking. Long periods in the saddle, exposure to heights and steep trail sections are part of the experience. Travelers uncomfortable with heights may prefer a rim-based ride if available.
