South Rim West
Hermit Road runs west from Grand Canyon Village to Hermits Rest, linking a series of overlooks with sections of the Rim Trail. From March 1 through November 30, 2026, the road is closed to normal private vehicle traffic, making the free Red Route shuttle, walking and biking the primary ways to explore it.
Ride
The Hermits Rest (Red) Route shuttle travels the scenic corridor during the main season. In summer 2026, NPS lists an 80-minute round trip without getting off, with frequent service and the final sweep after sunset.
Walk
The Rim Trail parallels much of the road. Walk selected segments between overlooks and use the shuttle to skip less interesting or tiring stretches. This creates a flexible point-to-point hike without committing to a long return walk.
Bike
Cycling Hermit Road can be one of the South Rim's best bike experiences because motor traffic is limited during shuttle season. Follow current bicycle and shuttle rules and be ready for hills, wind and traffic near stops.

Hop Off Selectively
Trying to exit at every overlook can consume an entire day and turn the shuttle into the main event. Choose a few viewpoints, walk one or two Rim Trail sections, and spend enough time at each stop to notice how the canyon changes. Hopi Point, Mohave Point and Pima Point are especially popular for wide views and sunset.

Hermits Rest
Mary Colter designed Hermits Rest in 1914 to evoke a rough miner's shelter. The building now contains a gift shop and snack bar, with restrooms nearby. The Hermit Trail begins a short distance west and descends steeply below the rim.
Sunset Strategy
West-facing overlooks make Hermit Road popular near sunset. Expect buses to be busiest afterward. Carry warm layers, know the final shuttle schedule and avoid being stranded far from the village after dark.
Storms Can Suspend Service
NPS may suspend Hermit Road shuttle service during thunderstorms or other dangerous weather. If that happens, follow ranger and driver instructions and do not remain exposed at overlooks.
Current 2026 Shuttle Information
From March 1 through November 30, normal private vehicles are restricted on Hermit Road. Seasonal bus frequency and first/last bus times change through the year, so use the NPS shuttle page for your exact visit date.
Best Sunset Fit
Hermit Road can work naturally as the late-day scenic corridor, but plan the return transportation before the light fades.
Two-Day Visit
Give Hermit Road its own block instead of forcing it into the same day as the full Desert View corridor.
