Public Comment Opens on Grand Canyon North Rim Recovery Plans
The National Park Service has opened a 30-day public involvement period on long-term recovery and redevelopment concepts for the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. Visitors, employees, surrounding communities, and others interested in the North Rim’s future can review planning materials and submit feedback through Nov. 6, 2026.
The planning effort follows the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, extensive recovery work over the past year, and recent flash floods. According to Grand Canyon National Park, those events have highlighted the need to consider resilient infrastructure, dependable utilities, public safety, emergency preparedness, and long-term planning in the North Rim’s remote and changing environment.
What the North Rim planning effort will consider
The National Park Service is asking for input on a vision and draft redevelopment concepts that are intended to guide the North Rim’s long-term recovery. This is an initial concept phase. Public comments will help refine potential alternatives before the park develops a comprehensive recovery plan.
The effort will examine several parts of the North Rim’s future, including:
- Visitor facilities
- Infrastructure and utilities
- Employee and operational needs
- Public safety and emergency preparedness
- The North Rim’s historic and natural character
Grand Canyon National Park Superintendent Ed Keable said the past year’s challenges have reinforced the need for careful planning. He said the park’s long-term vision should respect the North Rim’s history while strengthening its resilience and continuing to serve visitors, employees, and surrounding communities.
How visitors and the public can participate
During October, the National Park Service will provide multiple ways to learn about the planning effort and offer comments. These opportunities will include virtual and in-person public meetings.
Planning documents, meeting information, and instructions for submitting feedback are available through the project website, listed by the National Park Service as ParkPlanning – North Rim Recovery Plan. The public involvement period began Oct. 6, 2026, and ends Nov. 6, 2026.
- Public involvement period: Oct. 6 through Nov. 6, 2026
- Participation options: Virtual and in-person public meetings, along with written comments
- Planning information: Available on the North Rim Recovery Plan project website
Current Grand Canyon access and recovery work
Grand Canyon National Park remains open at both the North Rim and South Rim. However, affected areas of the inner canyon remain closed while recovery work continues.
The park also noted that current flood response and infrastructure recovery activities are separate from the long-term planning effort, although the ongoing work is relevant to the broader recovery and redevelopment discussion.
The National Park Service is encouraging anyone with an interest in the North Rim’s future to take part during the public involvement period. Feedback submitted during this stage will help shape the concepts considered as the park moves toward a comprehensive recovery plan.
