Modified Fall Operations Begin at Grand Canyon’s North Rim Oct. 15
Grand Canyon National Park will shift to modified fall operations at the North Rim beginning Oct. 15, 2026. Visitors planning a fall trip should prepare for road closures, reduced services, no fuel inside the park, and increasingly variable winter weather conditions.
The most significant short-term change is the temporary closure of Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road. Both roads will close from sunset on Oct. 15 through sunrise on Nov. 3 while crews conduct road repair and rehabilitation work with the Federal Highway Administration.
Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads close for repairs
According to Grand Canyon National Park, the closures are needed to provide a safe work area while crews complete critical repairs. Visitors will not be able to drive Cape Royal Road or Point Imperial Road during the closure period.
The North Rim itself will remain accessible before the seasonal entrance-gate closure, subject to road and weather conditions. However, travelers should expect fewer visitor services and should check current conditions before leaving for the park.
North Rim services begin closing Oct. 15
Several North Rim facilities and services will close as the fall transition begins:
- The North Rim Backcountry Information Center closes for the season at noon on Oct. 15.
- The General Store closes at 4 p.m. on Oct. 15.
- The North Rim Campground closes for the season on the morning of Oct. 16.
- The North Rim gas station closed Sept. 19, and fuel is not available within the park.
Backcountry recreation will remain available on the North Rim. The park said backcountry permits can still be obtained through the South Rim Backcountry Information Center and online at recreation.gov.
Visitors driving to the North Rim should arrive with enough fuel for their travel plans. The park identified nearby lodging, food and fuel about 45 miles north of the North Rim at Jacob Lake. More accommodations are available in Fredonia, Arizona, and Kanab, Utah.
North Kaibab Trail remains closed after flash flood damage
The North Kaibab Trail remains completely closed following the Aug. 29 flash flood. Grand Canyon National Park said the flooding caused extensive damage to the trail, bridges and other infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon.
Anyone considering a North Rim backcountry trip should account for the full trail closure when planning routes and permits.
Entrance gate expected to close by Nov. 30
The North Rim entrance gate on State Route 67 is scheduled to close at sunset on Nov. 30, 2026, or after the first major snowstorm, whichever occurs first. The timing means access may end earlier if significant snow arrives.
Park Superintendent Ed Keable urged visitors to plan for self-sufficient travel during the seasonal transition. Snow, ice and rain are common on the North Rim at this time of year, and the park cautioned that emergency response is extremely limited and may be significantly delayed.
Travelers heading to the North Rim before the gate closes should carry adequate food, water, fuel and emergency supplies, use added caution in winter conditions, and monitor current park closures. For Arizona highway conditions, the park directs visitors to Arizona Highway Information at 1-888-411-ROAD (7623).
