South Rim East
Desert View is 23 miles east of Grand Canyon Village and offers some of the South Rim's broadest views of the Colorado River and eastern canyon. It is also the park entrance that makes the most sense for many travelers arriving from Page, Cameron, Monument Valley and the Navajo Nation.

Desert View Watchtower
Mary Colter's 1932 stone tower is one of the park's most recognizable historic structures. The ground-level View Room is open daily. Upper-floor access depends on staffing and uses a free timed-capacity system when available.
Colorado River Views
The eastern rim gives visitors long views along bends of the Colorado River and exposes rock units that are harder to see from the village area. Navajo Point is especially useful for looking back toward the Watchtower.
East Entrance
The East Entrance is open 24 hours a day, year-round unless temporarily affected by snow or emergencies. It can save substantial driving for travelers approaching on US 89 through Cameron.

Desert View Drive
Arizona State Route 64 connects the village with Desert View through 23 miles of viewpoints and pullouts. It is the only South Rim scenic road generally open to private vehicles year-round. Choose several stops instead of trying to stop at every turnout. The best sequence depends on light, traffic and your direction of travel.
Tusayan Pueblo & Indigenous Programs
Three miles west of Desert View, Tusayan Pueblo preserves the remains of an Ancestral Puebloan community occupied roughly 800 years ago. The short self-guiding trail is a valuable reminder that Grand Canyon is a living cultural landscape. Desert View also hosts Indigenous cultural demonstrations and artisan programs during parts of the year.
2026 Tusayan Pueblo Season
The archaeological site is scheduled April 2–October 31, 2026, Thursday through Monday, 8 a.m.–4 p.m. The self-guided trail is short and relatively flat. Verify hours before a special trip.
Watchtower Demonstrations
Indigenous artists and cultural practitioners present scheduled demonstrations at the Watchtower. Programs are free, but dates and participants change.
Lipan Point Is Temporarily Closed
NPS lists Lipan Point and Lipan Point Road as closed from June 22 through December 23, 2026 for rehabilitation work. Other Desert View Drive viewpoints remain available unless conditions change. This is exactly why a live road/closure check matters before a scenic-drive day.
Parking & RVs
Desert View has automobile and RV/bus parking, restrooms and visitor services. Scenic pullouts vary in size, so long vehicles should plan conservatively.
Camping
Desert View Campground is seasonal and requires advance reservations in 2026. There is no overnight lodging at Desert View.
Food & Fuel
The developed area includes a market/deli, trading post, coffee/ice cream and pay-at-the-pump fuel, with hours varying by service.
Continuing to Page?
Desert View Drive and the East Entrance can become the scenic transfer toward Cameron and Page rather than an out-and-back drive.
Only One Day?
Pair the central South Rim with Desert View only when the east-side route naturally fits your arrival or departure.
