Grand Canyon South Rim Services Expand as Water Conservation Continues
Update — August 30, 2026: The conditions described below have been superseded. After the August 29 flash flood damaged the Transcanyon Waterline, Grand Canyon National Park announced Stage 4 water restrictions beginning at noon August 31. South Rim overnight concession lodging will close, camping will be limited to dry camping, most campground spigots will be turned off, and wood or charcoal fires will be prohibited. See our current conditions page before relying on the earlier August 20 service update.
Grand Canyon National Park was restoring some South Rim visitor services as water supply levels improved, while asking visitors and residents to continue conserving water. At the time of this August 20 update, water spigots at Mather and Desert View Campgrounds were turned on and Camper Services was scheduled to reopen August 21.
The National Park Service said the changes reflect continued progress in restoring services during the ongoing recovery. Water conservation measures have not been lifted, so visitors should continue limiting their water use during their stay.
Campground water service returns
Water spigots in both Mather Campground and Desert View Campground have been turned on. Camper Services, which is operated by Delaware North, will reopen to the public on August 21.
The update provides expanded services for visitors using the South Rim campgrounds, but the park continues to encourage conservation. The National Park Service recommends that visitors and residents:
- Take shorter showers
- Run full loads of laundry and dishes
- Turn off water when it is not being used
Campfire restrictions lifted at Mather and Desert View
Fire restrictions at Mather and Desert View Campgrounds have also been lifted. Campfires remain limited to established campfire rings. Grand Canyon National Park is reminding visitors and residents to use caution and practice responsible fire use at all times.
Visitors planning to camp at either location should continue following posted instructions and use only the designated campfire rings for fires.
Water conservation measures remain in place
Although water service and other visitor services are expanding, conservation measures continue at Grand Canyon National Park. The park said it appreciates the cooperation of visitors and the surrounding community as recovery efforts continue.
For South Rim travelers, the latest changes mean that campground spigots are available again at Mather and Desert View, Camper Services is set to reopen on August 21, and campground fire restrictions have been lifted under the established-ring requirement. Visitors should still plan to use water carefully throughout their visit.
