North Rim Facilities
The North Rim is open in 2026, but its service network is intentionally limited while the park recovers from the Dragon Bravo Fire. There is no in-park hotel lodging, no potable tap water, and no return to the old lodge-centered visitor experience. The practical service core is the campground area, General Store, gas station and limited backcountry information.
No In-Park Lodge
The 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and surrounding cabin district. Overnight hotel lodging is unavailable inside the North Rim in 2026. Use gateway lodging or the campground according to your route.
No Potable Tap Water
NPS advises visitors to bring the potable water they need. Bottled water and gallon containers are sold at the North Rim General Store, but the recovery-season water limitation should shape the trip before you arrive.
Fuel Is Available
The North Rim gas station currently provides 24-hour pay-at-the-pump service with unleaded and diesel. Fill earlier when convenient anyway: the approach is remote and a card or equipment problem should not become the trip's defining event.
North Rim Campground Is the In-Park Overnight Base
The campground reopened June 1 and is scheduled through October 15, 2026. There are no RV hookups and no campsite water hookups. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov, with a limited number of walk-up sites also available according to current NPS information.
The General Store Matters More Than Usual
The General Store beside the campground is the North Rim's essential 2026 retail stop, selling dry goods, grab-and-go food and bottled water. NPS lists daily hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May 15 through October 15. Do not confuse one useful store with a full-service village.
Use the Backcountry Information Center for Route-Specific Help
NPS lists the North Rim Backcountry Information Center beside the campground with morning staffing during the 2026 season. It is the appropriate place for permit and route questions, but current trail status still controls what is actually accessible. Because NPS pages are presently conflicting on the post-flood North Kaibab corridor, verify the live Key Hiking Messages before relying on an inner-canyon route.
VERIFY NORTH KAIBAB STATUS BEFORE LEAVING THE RIM
Current National Park Service pages disagree on the post-flood North Kaibab/Phantom Ranch corridor. The live Key Hiking Messages lists the entire North Kaibab Trail, Black Bridge and Silver Bridge as open, while other NPS pages updated August 31 still show flood closures for the same corridor and related facilities. Do not interpret an open campground, open Highway 67 or an operating Backcountry Information Center as proof of inner-canyon status. Check the live Key Hiking Messages immediately before a hike.
Bring More Than You Think You Will Need
Extra water, food, a full fuel tank, layers, sun protection and a backup meal or lodging plan reduce your dependence on a small service network that is still operating inside a major recovery effort.
Food
Use the General Store for limited grab-and-go options and carry backup food. Nearby seasonal services outside the park can help, but the North Rim itself is not operating as a restaurant-and-lodge complex in 2026.
Fire Restrictions
Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect for the 2026 season because of limited water resources. Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. Check the current restriction language before cooking or using any flame-producing device.
Emergency Planning
Cell service can be unreliable and distances are long. Share your route, carry basic emergency supplies and avoid depending on a phone or an open concession to solve every problem.
Check the Live North Rim Status
The 2026 season is unusually dynamic. Verify roads, water, campground status, trail closures, fire restrictions and concession services immediately before the final drive into the park.
