Camping & RV Parks
Camping can put you closer to sunrise, trails and wildlife than almost any hotel. Grand Canyon offers developed campgrounds on the rims, a full-hookup RV park inside the South Rim, and private options in gateway communities. Reservations are strongly recommended in busy seasons.
SOUTH RIM CAMPING IS TEMPORARILY LIMITED
Beginning at noon August 31, only dry camping will be permitted on the South Rim. Most campground water spigots will be turned off, though restroom faucets will remain available and NPS says water will be available at the Mather Campground check-in kiosk. Trailer Village is included in the temporary overnight accommodation closure. Wood and charcoal fires are prohibited. Check current NPS conditions before arrival.
Mather Campground
Located in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim, Mather is the park’s main developed campground and provides excellent access to shuttle routes, the general store and rim destinations.
Trailer Village RV Park
Trailer Village is normally the full-hookup RV park inside the South Rim developed area, but it is included in the temporary Stage 4 overnight-accommodation closure beginning August 31, 2026. Do not rely on a Trailer Village reservation until the park announces overnight operations have resumed.
Desert View
Desert View Campground is seasonal and places campers near the East Entrance and Watchtower, away from the busiest part of Grand Canyon Village. It works especially well for east-side road trips.
Camping is the in-park overnight option
Although hotel lodging is unavailable inside the North Rim in 2026, the North Rim Campground has reopened. Services remain more limited than in a normal season, so confirm water, fire restrictions, road access and campground status before arrival.
Do not count on a walk-up site
Spring, summer and fall dates can fill well in advance. RV travelers also need to verify site length, hookup needs and generator rules. If in-park camping is full, look at Tusayan, Valle, Williams, Jacob Lake and other regional private campgrounds.
Which Grand Canyon Campground Fits Best?
The best campground is not automatically the one closest to the rim. Match the site to whether you need hookups, shuttle access, an east-side location, North Rim access or a fallback outside the park.
Mather Campground
Choose Mather when you want to camp inside Grand Canyon Village and use the free shuttle system. It is open year-round and normally works especially well for tent campers and RV travelers who value location over utilities. During the Stage 4 restrictions beginning August 31, only dry camping is permitted, most campground water spigots are off, and campers should check the current NPS water status before arrival.
Trailer Village
Trailer Village is normally the full-hookup RV option inside the South Rim developed area, but the Stage 4 restrictions beginning August 31 temporarily halt overnight accommodations there. Until NPS announces a reopening, use Mather or Desert View only if dry camping fits your trip, or compare gateway RV parks outside the park.
Desert View Campground
Choose Desert View when your route naturally uses the East Entrance or when you want a quieter base away from Grand Canyon Village. For 2026, NPS lists the campground as open April 11 through October 18, with reservations required and no hookups.
North Rim Campground
The North Rim Campground reopened June 1, 2026, with reservations available through October 15. There are no RV hookups, and potable tap water is not available on the North Rim in 2026. Campers need to arrive with adequate water, plan for limited services, and check current fire and water restrictions before arrival.
Use Gateway Campgrounds Strategically
Do not treat every outside-the-park campground as equivalent. Tusayan keeps you closest to the South Entrance, Valle adds distance but can improve availability and price, Williams works well for travelers combining Route 66 or the railway, and Jacob Lake is the practical gateway for many North Rim trips.
RV Planning Checklist
Before booking, verify more than the campground name. Site dimensions, hookups, generator hours, dump-station access, vehicle length and seasonal road conditions can matter more than the nightly rate.
Site Length
Confirm the campsite can accommodate the combined length of your RV, trailer and tow vehicle where applicable.
Hookups & Water
NPS campgrounds do not provide RV hookups. Trailer Village is normally the in-park full-hookup exception, but Stage 4 restrictions beginning August 31 temporarily halt overnight accommodations there. North Rim camping in 2026 also has no water hookups.
Road & Weather
Snow, wildfire restrictions, construction and seasonal closures can affect large vehicles differently than passenger cars. Recheck conditions before the drive.
