Grand Canyon North Rim — 2026
The North Rim reopened May 15, 2026 after the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, but this remains a limited-service recovery season. Scenic roads are open and day use is possible. In-park lodging is unavailable and potable tap water is not available, so arrive self-sufficient. Inner-canyon trail status changed after the August 29 flash flood and should be checked separately from rim-road access immediately before travel.
VERIFY NORTH KAIBAB & PHANTOM RANCH STATUS
Current NPS hiking guidance lists the entire North Kaibab Trail closed, with Phantom Ranch and both Colorado River footbridges also closed. Select North Rim roads and scenic areas remain open, so rim sightseeing is a separate decision from rim-to-rim or Phantom Ranch access. Use the live Key Hiking Messages and North Rim status immediately before travel.
Roads Open
Highway 67, Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial Road remain open for the 2026 season, giving access to major scenic viewpoints.
No In-Park Lodge
Overnight lodging is not available inside the North Rim developed area in 2026. Plan lodging outside the park or use the campground/backcountry system where current closures allow.
Bring Water
Potable tap water is not available on the North Rim in 2026. Bottled and gallon water may be sold at the General Store, but visitors should arrive with their own supply.
Point Imperial & Cape Royal
The reopened paved scenic roads reach some of the North Rim's most distinctive perspectives, including Point Imperial, Cape Royal, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook and Angels Window. Vehicles and vehicle-trailer combinations over 22 feet are not permitted on Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads because of tight turns and limited parking.
Hiking in 2026
The North Rim trail picture changed after the August 29 flash flood. Current NPS Key Hiking Messages list the entire North Kaibab Trail closed, along with Phantom Ranch and both Colorado River footbridges. Several rim-area trails also remain closed during fire recovery. Burned watersheds can carry increased flash-flood, debris-flow, rockfall and falling-tree hazards during storms. Check the live hiking messages and North Rim status immediately before choosing a trail.
North Rim Campground
The campground reopened June 1, 2026 and is scheduled through October 15. There are no RV hookups and water is not available at campsites. Reservations are handled through Recreation.gov, with some walk-up availability noted by NPS. Current inner-canyon closures do not automatically mean the developed rim campground is closed, but recheck status before travel.
Verify Rim-to-Rim Status Before Making Transfers
Rim-to-rim hiking depends on a continuous North Kaibab route, a usable river crossing, and workable transportation and water conditions. Current NPS hiking guidance lists the entire North Kaibab Trail and both Colorado River footbridges closed. Check the live hiking messages and current alerts for your date before reserving a shuttle, lodging or other crossing logistics.
North Rim vs. South Rim
The North Rim is visited by a much smaller share of Grand Canyon visitors and feels more remote. The South Rim has far more services and is better for most first-time trips.
2026 Is a Special Case
Treat any older North Rim guidebook or blog cautiously. Fire recovery and the August 29 flash flood have changed lodging, water, trails and services this season.
North Rim Village
Orient around the developed village area, nearby viewpoints and trail connections.
Facilities
Check camping, water, food and visitor-service availability before arrival.
Cape Royal Road
Build a scenic drive around major overlooks, short walks and current vehicle restrictions.
